Just a piece inspired by Elvis Perkin’s song “Shampoo” (above). Little bit of a different style, not 100% happy with it, but not so much so that I want to work on it anymore.

This is the style I default to when I doodle — round faces, small eyes, bendy bodies and simple mouths. I try for a more realistic look on most of my finished pieces, but sometimes the more realistic pieces lack the life and flow of the doodlier stuff. So, I’ll keep practicing on those finished pieces, and in the meantime here are some cute, fashionable little girls doing their thing.

I’d done a picture a couple of years ago of a girl sitting in a chair surrounded by pink iguanas (they were in the news quite a bit then, as it had recently been discovered they were genetically distinct from their green cousins — fascinating!) The perspective on the chair was a bit wonky, though, and I thought the girl was somewhat stiff looking. I still liked the color scheme though, and the idea of a bookish girl and stoic looking lizards. So, I redid the piece, this time with no chair and action-filled iguanas.

My husband especially likes the iguanas’ expressions. A bit less stoic than I’d planned, but they certainly look happy about their newfound flight abilities. Here’s the older picture, by the way, for comparison:

One of my favorite performers, Neko Case! I have another, older picture I did of her that’s still in my illustration portfolio, but thought I’d do another one. Originally, I’d wanted to have the birds sitting on her antlers and crying bright blue tears. That didn’t work out, though, the birds were so small that the tears ended up looking like giant tacky costume jewelry (for birds!) at bigger sizes, or not visible at all at smaller sizes. So, I ditched the tears and used brightly colored string instead.

Only a month late, really! I love horror movies, and I REALLY love the Saw franchise. Tobin Bell is definitely my creepy old-guy movie crush, so I did a pic to celebrate his awesomeness, complete with piggy helpers. One of these days I’d love the time to do some more horror antagonists, especially Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre, or the scary inbreds from The Hills Have Eyes (brrr… those guys creep me out every time I see any of the Hills movies, remakes or originals…)
